| Text | Hello, The Hamlet People! Great web site. I was looking up William Lewis Fraser (had forgotten his wife's name) and continued reading about Malcolm, etc. Do put the second "L" in Malcolm's name - it is missing in places. When I got down to Phyllis Fraser, I saw you had nothing about her husband except his name. I was married to her son, Philip Fraser Champlain, for a time and I can fill you in on his father Francis "Frank" Alexander Champlin b. 04 Dec 1896, East Hampton, L.I., NY. m. Phyllis Fraser, 31 Jan, 1920, Brookhaven. d.17 Jan, Brookhaven, L.I. Spelling of name changed to Champlain.* son of William Frederick Champlin b. 28 Dec 1861/64, Orient, L.I. d. 06 Jan, 1934, Patchogue, L.I. m. 02 Sep 1890 New Haven, CT, Amalia Gatowitsch (sp?) b.1870, Russia. d. ?, NY. son of Nathan Champlin b. 11 Nov 1817, Lyme, CT. d. 24 Jun, 1887, NY. m. 30 Apr 1849 Old Lyme, CT, Phebe Dorr b. 16 May 1835/36 Old Lyme, CT. d.20 Aug, 1913, Bellport, L.I. Frank was brother of William F. Champlin b.1894 and Eva Champlin Howland (Mrs. Harry T.); both, I believe, of Patchogue. *Name change. Phyllis did not care for Frank's family. Apparently there are, or were, lots of Champlins on L.I. and there were some, at least, who were always in trouble with the law. She did not specify who, or what sort of trouble. She merely said, "in and out of jail". She did not wish anyone to think her children were involved in any such goings-on, so she simply dropped an "a" into the name. As far as I am aware, this was not a legal change. Frank apparently accepted this alteration, and the children were brought up to sign themselves as Champlains. However, it was always pronounced Champlin. I am not sure when the change was made. Hope this helps. Bettina Champlain bobolink31@hotmail.com John -- Sorry to have omitted Francis Alexander's Champlin/Champlain's death date. 17 Jan, 1958. If you know Faith McCutcheon, she is undoubtedly much more knowledgeable about her father than I am. Faith's daughter Katie sent me the information on Francis Alexander's ancestry when her cousin Lisa told her I was trying to put together a family tree for my Champlain children. I have known for years that Malcolm Fraser and his multi talented father and grandfather were not descended from Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, though Phyllis was convinced her father was. They were, however, Lovat Frasers. * * * * * Just received your second e-mail. Nathan and Phebe Dorr Champlin were the parents of William Frederick. William Frederick (born 1860/61) and Amalia were the parents of 3 children, William Frederick Champlin (born 1894) named after his father, Eva Champlin Howland and Francis Alexander Champlin/Champlain. Only Francis Alexander ("Frank"), or rather Phyllis, changed the spelling. His sister Eva disapproved strongly of her having done so. Hope this clears things up. Bettina P.S. Sorry for using F.A.'s nickname in first letter. No one ever called him anything but Frank. | |
